Samba percussion originates from the vibrant music of Brazil and can be used by bands in both educational and professional settings. Samba instruments are wildly popular in schools due to how they can be used for group activities in the classroom or performances and serve as a great source of learning for students interested in world music.

Izzo
Izzo manufacture quality samba drums and percussion, which are particularly popular in schools, and have been for over 60 years. Chamberlain Music imports Izzo samba percussion directly from Brazil as we know it is the best.
Agogos
Agogos, also known as gan gans, are instruments that feature either a single or multiple bells and are used in throughout the world, including in Brazilian samba music. Within samba music, they are used to create rhythmic patterns.
For agogos made with natural materials we supply the Percussion Plus wooden double agogo bells and Percussion Plus Honestly Made natural agogo, and the Percussion Plus medium double agogo bells and Halilit Hi-lo range agogo have two different tones for each bell.
Samba whistles
Also known as apito de samba, samba whistles are used during performances by the band leader (the mestre de bateria) as they use the whistle to signal transitions in the music to the rest of the band.
Samba whistles we provide include the Percussion Plus samba whistle and Percussion Workshop tri-tone samba whistle.
Surdo drums and beaters
Surdo drums are large bass drums that play lower parts in the percussion of the Samba band. The typical samba performance has three separate surdo parts driving the samba’s rhythm, with each surdo being a different size with a distinct tuning. The different sizes are the primeira (the largest), the segunda (slightly smaller) and the terceira (the smallest).
Examples of some of the surdo drums we supply include the Izzo Junior surdo and Izzo Senior surdo, and we also provide beaters such as the Izzo single wooden surdo beater.
For tuning your surdos, we also have the Izzo Nesting surdo tuning lug and plate.
Tamborims
The tamborim is a small, round frame drum with Portuguese and African origin. As well as samba music, it is also used in bossa nova and chorinho, and it is often played with a small wooden drumstick, or sometimes simply with fingers. In samba, the tamborim is played alternating between the main musical pattern (carreteiro) and other key phrases.
The tamborims we have available include the Izzo ABS 6” tamborim and the Izzo wooden 6” tamborim.
Pandeiros
A tunable drumhead with metal jingles (platinelas) along the rim, the pandeiro is used in samba music to create a crisp, dry tone within the percussion.
Some of our available pandeiros are the Izzo ABS 10” pandeiro, the Izzo wooden 10” pandeiro and the Izzo wooden 10” tambourine/pandeiro.
Repiniques
The repinique is a two-headed drum used in samba music which is typically made of metal and nylon. It is often played with a wooden stick and one hand, and the pattern played on this drum sets the tempo that the rest of the band (bateria) play to, and because of this it is often played by the director of the band.
Some great repiniques we supply are the Izzo Junior 10” repinique and the Izzo Senior 12” repinique.
