Introducing the Yamaha CX Series grand pianos

Over the course of the last 50 years the Yamaha C series has become the standard for practice and performance worldwide, and a benchmark by which all other grand pianos are measured.

The cornerstone of Yamaha’s grand piano offering, today's CX series is the culmination of over 100 years of piano manufacturing expertise, in a range of premium quality Japanese-made instruments ranging from the smallest 5’3” model C1X to the semi-concert size 7’6” model C7X.

Uncompromising build quality and innovation

While many manufacturers rarely change their designs, Yamaha is constantly innovating and researching ways to improve their pianos. Incorporating many developments and design features first seen in the ground-breaking Yamaha CFX concert grand, a new Yamaha CX series grand piano is better than ever before.

Crafted in Japan at Yamaha’s main Hamamatsu manufacturing facility, Yamaha CX Series grand pianos are built to uncompromisingly high standards using specially selected materials.

The back frame

The back-frame forms the skeleton of the piano, it supports the instrument and transforms energy from the vibrating soundboard into a rich and resonant tone. A weak back-frame bends under heavy fortissimo playing and loses this energy, and consequently tonal quality. The back-frame on a CX Series grand piano is thicker than previous generations, significantly improving the depth of tone, and on the C3X and above is around 20% thicker.

Soundboard

The beating heart of the piano, the soundboard amplifies the vibrations of the strings, producing the instantly recognisable tone of an acoustic piano. Constructed in the same way as the soundboard of the flagship CFX concert grand, Yamaha’s CX Series soundboards feature a beautifully curved crown, redesigned to enhance tonal projection and clarity, and with improved methods of affixing the ribs and the bridge to maximise its freedom to resonate.

Stringing wire

The stringing wire is first and foremost what produces the tone of the piano. Specially selected by Yamaha’s design engineers to complement the characteristics of the hammers and soundboard, the strings of a CX Series piano produce a rich sound with rich overtones, particularly in the middle and upper registers, resulting in a deep and harmonious tonal quality.

Frame

With 20 tons of pressure exerted on a grand piano’s frame, it must support the tension of the strings without wasting any energy, while also ensuring ongoing stability and longevity. Produced from cast iron, Yamaha is one of the only piano manufacturers with its own foundry, utilising a process known as vacuum casting, a method developed by Yamaha and honed over many years to decipher the optimum casting temperature and composition of the alloy for tonal quality and stability.

Hammers

Hammer quality is critical to the tonal quality of the piano, so to ensure the expressive and malleable tone of the Yamaha CX Series, Yamaha produces its hammers in-house. CX Series hammers are produced from the same material as those of the CFX concert grand, with the consistency of felt specially matched to the size of each model to deliver optimum tonality and expressivity.

Exquisite cabinetry

The specially designed cabinetry of the CX series piano features simple, sweeping lines and straight, unornamented legs to not distract from the beauty of the sound. A solid, functional pedal box provides rigidity even under the most vigorous pedalling while perfectly matching the elegant, unfussy lines of the piano. Luxurious touches include brass fittings and a soft-close fallboard, gently bringing the keyboard of the piano to a close.  We always have Yamaha CX Series grand pianos in stock in polished ebony with brass fittings, while other finishes are available to order. If you are looking for a specific finish start a conversation with us, and we will be delighted to assist.

Yamaha CX Series models:

Yamaha C1X:

Remarkably well balanced and responsive, the 5’3” long C1X is a perfect choice of baby grand piano for the home, markedly more resonant and refined than the GC1 and smaller GB1K.

Yamaha C2X:

Sharing the action of the smaller C1X and measuring 5’8” long, the additional soundboard area and string length of the C2X results in a more powerful and richer tonal quality. Similar in size to and worth comparing against the Steinway Model O and Boston GP178.

Yamaha C3X:

At 6’1” this is the cornerstone of Yamaha’s entire range, beautifully balanced and expressive in tone, a perfect choice for the home or venue. Worth comparing against the Kawai GX-3 at our Haslemere, Surrey showroom where we always try to have both side-by-side.

Yamaha C5X:

Benefiting from a European spruce soundboard, the 6’7” long C5X is a powerful instrument with additional warmth over the smaller C3X.

Yamaha C6X:

A wonderful choice of performance piano and popular in recording studios, performance venues and larger homes. The same size as the Steinway B at 6’11” and considered the perfect size for power and presence.

Yamaha C7X:

The largest CX Series model and only slightly shorter than a full concert grand, the 7’6 long C7X is a refined and powerful performance quality instrument, the pinnacle of the CX Series.
