The JP171SW was designed in collaboration with professional brass manufacturers Smith-Watkins and features unique Smith-Watkins components, such as the exclusive design of the rose brass leadpipe and rose brass bell, which gives the instrument a more expressive sound, along with excellent articulation for a rich, warm tone. It also has high tolerance monel valves, which help to deliver a quick and responsive action.

The original lubricant oil was missing from the package, although they promptly compensated with an alternative brand of oil. However, the package appeared to have been previously opened and resealed.
