Introducing the John Packer JP181 student oboe outfit

The JP181MKII is a brilliantly designed student oboe featuring a complete dual keywork system with semi automatic octaves and silver plated plateau keys. Now in its second generation, white leather pads and improved cork make for a more durable and quieter setup, and the overall layout of keys and adjustment screws has been greatly improved. Of particular note is the inclusion of a left hand F key which only tends to be found on more advanced oboes.

Warm tone and consistent tuning

The ebonite hard rubber body isn't affected by temperature or humidity and is impervious to cracking which is a common problem with wooden instruments. Despite its relative cheapness, it responds just like a wooden alternative, with a beautiful warm tone and large dynamic range. The scale is even and smooth, and all the awkward intervals slur effortlessly and reliably making this model equal to many pricier intermediate instruments.

What are the different types of oboe?

Thumplate oboes are widely used in the UK as starting instruments. They feature simplified keywork and a narrower bore to make them more accessible for younger players. Dual system oboes have more advanced keywork and generally a bigger bore, and are intended for players of a higher standard doing solo or orchestral work. Conservatoire system oboes are mainly found in Continental Europe and the US, and have a different fingering technique altogether which is also intended for more advanced players.
