A microphone stand allows the mic to be positioned in the required place without the need for a person to hold it. Stands can be supplied with folding tripod legs (allowing the stand to be packed away easily), or with round metal bases. A boom mic stand allows the mic to be placed at a greater distance from the stand base, making it ideal for miking up drums, or to be used by guitarists who do not want the base of the stand to interfere with footswitches or effects pedals.
